Located just 80 kilometres, or under an hours drive, due south of Adelaide, Victor Harbor is one of the most popular coastal playgrounds in South Australia. Many visitors travelling from the eastern states take the Great Ocean Road and access Victor Harbor by crossing the mighty Murray River at Wellington.
It has been a favourite holiday destination for travellers and families since the late 1800s and maintains a sense of rustic charm. The Mediterranean climate lends itself to amiable experiences year round. The town itself is nestled in Encounter Bay, with a coastline featuring the dramatic rock outcrop of The Bluff and the very popular Granite Island.
Experiences abound when visiting Victor Harbour. On Granite Island you simply have to try the world’s only daily Horse Drawn Tram service, which has been in operation since 1886. Maybe you’d like to catch one of the heritage SteamRanger trains that travels along our scenic coastline to investigate the South Australian Whale Centre and the Encounter Coast Discovery Centre.
Maybe you’d just like to head off and explore the natural surrounds. Miles of sandy beaches, clifftop trails, coastal bikeways and a wealth of flora and fauna parks make this a natural getaway.
Waterborne activities include swimming, surfing, jet-sking, snorkeling, kayaking, paddling or canoeing around Encounter Bay’s reefs and islands.
Wildlife encounters are also the name of the game, Victor Harbor offers some of the best spots for Close up, land-based Whale Watching with many easy to access vantage points as well as boat tours to enjoy. You can spot seals, penguins, pods of dolphins, pelicans and a wide variety of other native wildlife on your adventures around Encounter Bay. There’s also plenty of opportunity to have a traditional holiday experience. Relax and play golf, lawn bowls, croquet, tennis or volleyball, there are a multitude of things to do when you holiday in Victor Harbor.
And if those weren’t reason enough, the proximity to Kangaroo Island, to the River Port of Goolwa and to the Southern Wine Region makes this a choice location to base a holiday for other great South Australian experiences.
